Jane Eyre's Daughter

The other week I went to the library and just walked up and down the shelfs grabbing books that looked or sounded interesting. Jane Eyre's Daughter was one of those books. I wasn't sure what to expect from a book that references one of my favorite all time classic books. But once I started reading it, I couldn't stop and I had to read it as fast as possible which meant Jon had a lot of free time without me.

I would give the book about a 4 out of a 5 star. It was well written and close enough to the language that was used in the classics like Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice. Close enough considering we don't speak or write like that anymore. I liked how it referenced to the original story but wasn't focused too much on Jane Eyre. It was it's own story. It was your classic story about love, pain, hardships, and joy. It was interesting and dramatic. But it was a bit too predictable. Predictability usually doesn't bother me. Almost all chick flicks are predictable. I just wish they had made the twists a bit more surprising. I also felt like the author could have made the book a bit longer and build up the last few chapters a bit more. The ending went by too fast and could have included a lot more. I am not even sure how I felt about the very ending and about the part of the plot it focused on. But I understand what the author was trying to do with it.

Over all, I am very glad I read this book. It was a relatively quick read and nice to have a shorter version of the classic novels. I haven't read Pride and Prejudice but now that I read this book, and remember how much I love Jane Eyre, I think I will tackel it soon. Speaking of which, I think this author has a similiarly done sequal for Pride and Prejudice.

Today, I am thankful that I only had to wait at the DMV for an hour and a half on Saturday and that my license is now renewed. I am a legal driver in a legal car. It was a close one this year. Good thing I didn't get pulled over (my registration was 2 months overdue. EEK!).

  1. Good review! :) I thought it was good too, but at the same time, rather disturbing. Janet was waaaaay to interested in her father ...

  2. Haha! I totally forgot to write about that part of the story. Maybe I was just trying to forget it, because yes it was rather disturbing. But then again, who she did end up marrying would also tend to disturbe us these days.
